Celebrate Biking All Month Long

May is National Bike Month and there are many ways to celebrate!

The New River Valley Bike to Work Challenge runs from May 16th to May 23rd. Log a bike trip in the ConnectingVA app to be entered to win prizes and rewards, including new cycling gear!

Join us on Friday, May 23rd between 7:30am and 9:00am at the Draper Road tent in Blacksburg for refreshments and fun before you ride to work.

Not Sure If You Can Bike to Work?

The cool gear and clothes might make it easier, but Lycra is not required to reap the benefits of cycling. You only need a little planning to get going. Here are some ideas:

  • Ride to a coworker’s house and carpool to work.
  • Try riding to work and taking mass transit home, then alternating the next day.
  • Bike to the nearest transit stop and take your bicycle with you on the bus.
  • Do a test ride on the weekend – check out the ConnectingVA trip planner to find the fastest way to work.

Remember, when sharing the road, make sure you wear high visibility clothing and abide by the motor vehicle laws of the Commonwealth. At night, wear reflective clothing or accessories, use a headlight and taillight and always wear a helmet. Health Benefits of Biking

Cycling to work can transform your daily commute into an enjoyable part of your day. Numerous studies have shown that daily exercise can reduce stress, boost your mood, improve sleep, and reduce anxiety. It also improves cardiovascular and aerobic fitness, lowers blood pressure, builds muscle, and can increase energy levels.
