Why Bicycle Parking
Bicycle parking is a vital component of a sustainable transportation system. Secure and convenient bicycle parking makes it easier for individuals to choose cycling for transportation and recreation, reducing car trips and supporting healthier, greener communities.
Through the RIDE Solutions RVARC program, we provide resources and information to help residents and visitors locate and access bicycle parking across the region. We also support communities and organizations by offering free bike racks to eligible applicants.

FREE bike racks
for the Roanoke Region
The Friends of the Blue Ridge (FBR) a Roanoke-based nonprofit dedicated to protecting and serving the Blue Ridge region, has partnered with RIDE Solutions RVARC to expand access to bicycle parking across the area.
This collaboration strives to deliver quality bike racks designed with industry standards and manufacture in Roanoke, Virginia. These bike racks support sustainable transportation by making it easier for communities and organizations to accommodate cyclists.

These efforts aim to promote cycling as a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation, reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality in our region.
Program Details
- Need better access to non-motorized modes of transportation.
- Are underserved or lack adequate bike parking.
- See high numbers of visitors or serve as popular gathering places.
- Provide a public service.
By distributing bike racks, the program aims to:
- Increase bicycle parking availability across the FBR/RVARC service area.
- Enhance access to public institutions, recreational opportunities, and community gathering spaces.
- Ensure equitable placement of bike racks throughout the region, prioritizing locations where they will provide the greatest benefit to users and visitors.

- Have you noticed employees or customers locking bikes to trees, street signs, or railings?
- Is your location accessible via bike infrastructure, such as the Greenway Network or bicycle-friendly streets?
RIDE Solutions, in partnership with the Friends of the Blue Ridge, is here to help! Eligible businesses and organizations can receive free bike racks to improve bike parking and support sustainable transportation.
How to Apply
Application Process for 2025 is now open
Applications for the 2025 FBR-RVARC Bike Racks will be accepted through February 28, 2025.
To apply, choose one of the following methods:
- Online Form: Complete the application directly on this site.
- Fillable PDF Form: Download the FBR-RVARC Bike Rack Application.
RVARC may also contact certain public or non-profit organizations to explore their interest in receiving a bike rack.
Bike Rack Details
- Manufactured Locally: The bike racks are made in Roanoke, Virginia.
- Customizable Options: Choose from:
- Single Hoop Bike Racks
- Bike Corral (4 hoops mounted on a railing)
Each organization or business may request:
- Up to 4 single hoops, or
- 1 bike corral per application.
Recipient Responsibilities
The bike rack recipient is responsible for:
- Installation, including:
- Right-of-way permits, if required.
- Surface preparation and maintenance.
- Long-term upkeep of the bike racks.
RVARC Support
RVARC staff are available to assist with:
- Site assessments
- Recommendations for rack size
- Installation guidance

Bike Racks
Since 2023, the Friends of Blue Ridge and RIDE Solutions collaboration has resulted on the production and donation of 18 bicycle racks to localities across the Roanoke Valley including, the Alleghany Highlands, Roanoke County, and the City of Roanoke.
