2nd Annual Ciclovía Invites You to Play in the Street, Saturday May 22nd
For Immediate Release, 5/19/2010

Roanoke, Va., May 19th, 2009 – Roanoke City Parks and Recreation and RIDE Solutions invite you to play in the street this Saturday, May 22nd from 9 A.M. until 1 P.M. during Roanoke’s 2nd Ciclovía. Ciclovía will close several streets in Downtown Roanoke and open them up to pedestrians, children, artists, cyclists, skateboarders, and more. Among the activities planned for the day are aerobics with the YMCA; dodgeball, line dancing, and a bicycle skills course with Roanoke City Parks and Recreation; a children’s area including facepainting, chalk art throughout the route; and more.

The event will close down the northbound lane of Jefferson St. to Norfolk Ave., Norfolk to First St., First to Franklin, and Franklin back to Jefferson, with sections of Kirk, Luck, and Market also closed. A complete map can be found at www.bikeroanoke.com/cicloviaw.

Ciclovía is not a fair, festival, rally, or protest; it is an opportunity for people to temporarily reclaim urban space dedicated to cars for human use. Organizers of Ciclovía encourage participants to be creative in taking advantage of the opportunity – bring lawn chairs and sunbathe, gather some friends for board games at the many tables which will be set up throughout the circuit; show off your tricked-out bicycle or start an impromptu street band.

In case of severe weather: Ciclovía organizers will announce on Friday evening by 9:00 pm via the front page of bikeroanoke.com and Facebook if the event is to be canceled due to inclement weather. Organizers will cancel only if heavy rain or thunderstorms are forecasted.

The Ciclovía is presented by Roanoke City Parks and Recreation and RIDE Solutions. Sponsors include Bike Barn, Keen, Alexander’s Restaurant, Pop’s Ice Cream and Soda Bar, Roanoke Outside, and Eastcoasters. More information can be found at www.bikeroanoke.com.

Ciclovia is part of Bike Month in Roanoke. RIDE Solutions and its partners have created a series of events for riders of all ages and skill levels. Check out www.bikeroanoke.com/events for a complete list.
