Bikeshare Coming to the Roanoke Valley

We're excited to bring bikeshare to the Roanoke Valley this spring with Zagster Bikeshare.

You may already be familiar with bikeshare programs like Capital Bikeshare in DC or Citibike in NYC.  If not, here are the basics: bikesharing is a membership-based, short-term bike rental program where users check out a bike at one station and ride it to another, primarily for practical trips like shopping, commuting, and dining.  In the past, programs of this scale were beyond Roanoke’s reach, but with Zagster bikeshare we can finally bring this great feature to the valley.

By bringing bikeshare to Roanoke we hope to make it easier for people to choose to ride a bike for transportation and explore our greenway network, great neighborhoods, and dynamic urban centers.  Essentially, through bikeshare we hope to enable more bicycle transportation in the Roanoke Valley and especially in the downtown core – people making short trips by bike that will help reduce congestion, improve road safety, improve air quality, provide access to healthy activity, all while promoting Roanoke’s brand as a great place to be outdoors and supporting our overall economic development efforts.

Right now, our goal is to get the program launched in mid-April 2017 in advance of the Blue Ridge Marathon so we can show off the system to residents AND visitors over that massive weekend.

Between now and then, RIDE Solutions is working hard to make the system be the best it can be, and for that we need your help!

  1. We want to know what the community wants from a bikeshare system: where you would go, how you would use it, what you might pay.  We’ve launched a brief 5-Second Survey to give you a chance to tell us what would make this system work for you.  Taking the survey provides valuable feedback to us – and puts you in the running for one of 10 $5 Starbucks gift cards!
  2. Our bikeshare system will rely on sponsorships from local organizations to be successful.  Right now, we are please to have Downtown Roanoke Inc., Carilion Clinic, and Garland Properties on board as confirmed sponsors.  Sponsoring a single bike or an entire station can be a great benefit to your business – from the recognition you’ll get on the bikes, stations, in the mobile app and on the website, to the great member benefits and discounts you’ll be able to offer your employees and customers.  To request sponsorship information contact RIDE Solutions Director Jeremy Holmes at jholmes@rvarc.org.
